CUSHION ENSEMBLE

2023
Material: fabric, millet hulls + pine shavings (filling)

In contrast with the traditional rigid form of upholstered objects, I aimed to create a product that, like a bean bag, possesses no rigid frame and thus brings in an interactive experience.

The cushion exists in different scales, that interact with each other to form different seating possibilities. It allows todecide what position to have – lay, sit, even bring in other people by adding more cushion modules.

The filling consists of millet hulls (a by-product of dehulling millet grains) and pine shavings, making it more sustainable than conventional bean bags, which are typically filled with styrofoam pearls.

One cushion consists of two octagons that create a sitting/laying surface, where more of the cushions can be tied together to create bigger surfaces. The cushions have tying ports that are a simple button-buttonhole system. I got inspired by the tufting technique used in upholstery to create padding. Pinching the top and the bottom of the cushions together gave them a much firmer form.
